Weight Loss, Quilting and Hugging My Teenagers: New Year's Resolutions

Everyone is writing about New Year's Resolutions and for all our SEO sakes, other bloggers are NOT dieting but they do know what makes a popular search item this time of year.

For me, I AM dieting and I do plan to lose some serious weight in 2012 because I let WAY too much pile on in the last three years. Gotta love turning 43.

Life is good, too busy for exercise and yet, it's gotta be done. I gotta move the tush. Move it, move it, move it. But, what really matters is tracking it all. It's the only thing that has ever made the difference: tracking calories, tracking exercise. I have always needed accountability.

On New Year's Eve, a friend suggests the app My Fitness Pal. I love it. And, then I got a friend request. Oh boy, my twin brother wants to share in the accountability. We'll see how THAT goes. Hopefully we can keep it civil. You ate WHAT?!

{Oh, this is rich. He sent me a message: "Cheater!" He thought the tiny update said "Sarah jogged" for the last 5 days instead of "Sarah logged" my entries for the last 5 days. I am so NOT the jogger. Another new resolution: start jogging.}

One a Day Keeps the Doctor Away!

But, my personal dieting plan isn't just a commitment to eating less calories. I also plan to take the vitamins I left behind about the time my behind starting growing. And, I was sent Slim Select which uses saffron to abate hunger. I have no idea if it really works but knowing I am putting something in my body intentionally to help me diet also works on my brain. I need to make this work. It's a mental thing.

{Update: Down 5 pounds! Plateaued this morning b/c I didn't exercise yesterday. Must go walking later!}

Quilt in the works

Fat Quarters

And then there's quilting. I loved learning to quilt just before I got married. Work, kids, other hobbies took the place of my fledgling sewing efforts. But, the old Singer is coming out of retirement. The picture here shows some fun fat quarters just waiting to be trimmed, cut and sewn! I have a special plan but you will have to wait and watch the progress! And, the square packages and batting squares are for easy-sew flannel quilts that will be fun projects with my girls, who I plan to spend the year hugging more than ever! It's hitting me that there are mere years before college and I need to enjoy every moment! I am collecting variety of quilt images on my new Pinterest board, a fun new way to curate images on the Internet!

Last but not least, it is hitting me that I have two teenagers now and it won't be long until they are in college and we are empty nesters!! Time to hug and squeeze my girls more than ever and plan some one-on-one time with each {as I mentally scream to the one who just tried to talk to me – "I haven't finished this post in days. Can you JUST give me a few minutes?" Oh, the irony.}

And then, there's working at the college – I am teaching a new class this Spring on "Freelancing & Shameless Self Promotion" from which I hope to post weekly updates as I develop each topic. And, I have been and will continue working for the very vivacious Debbie Bookstaber in public relations for the lifestyle and toy industry. It's going to be a fun year (hopefully without the 2011 roller coaster of deaths & drama mixed with incredible new job & lifetime opportunities. At some point, I have will have stop and thoughtfully reflect on the sheer craziness of last year but time is at a minimum for quiet reflection these days – yet ANOTHER lifetime resolution.)

Happy 2012 all! It's a presidential election year. Should be interesting! Oh, and learning to use my fancy new Sony a65 camera is a whole 'nother post for another day!

My lovely young ladies and Carmel, our beagle

Saturday AM Christmas Brunch with author Stephanie Hubach of Same Lake, Different Boat (Coming Alongside People Touched by Disability)

This Saturday I am hosting an annual women's Christmas brunch at 10 AM  at which we will hear from Stephanie Hubach speaking from her experience and book chronicling the life of a mother faced with a disabled child. This event is being organized by Grace and Peace Presbyterian Church and will be at my house. Anyone is welcome to come (but please do RSVP)! Babysitting is provided.

To get ready for this event, I've been sneaking in snatches of reading time on the Kindle which holds the e-book version of Same Lake, Different Boat. Stephanie shares both endearing stories of raising her son who was born with Down's Syndrome and practical tips on how to deal with the related challenges and blessings. I am excited to have her come and I would love a great turnout. This is in my house so space may be limited and I don't want to put my address out here on the Internet. Please contact me if you are interested in coming!

Christmas Tree, Egg Nog and . . . Vaccines?

Ahhh . . Finally a minute to breath . . . and to blog! It's been truly the busiest Fall in many years with my teaching and recent work in the PR world and yet, I am still  a blogger at heart, a person who loves to craft thoughts and words into shareable snippets.

A blogger always has a post in the back of their brain, waiting for it to mature, to grow and when ready, to publish. Today, as my family and I prepared for our annual Christmas tree hunt, I thought deeply about vaccines. Yes, you heard me correctly . .  vaccines  . .  . of all varieties.

"Let's go cut a tree," says my husband.

Oh, oh, . . . I need to write a post about that trip to GlaxoSmithKline I went on several weeks ago.

"Everyone . . put on your boots and warm jackets," he reminds.

Wait, let me just find that email. Where is that picture of the women who stayed to tour the plant? Got it! Download quick and save for later. Couldn't stay the whole time because I was called during the plant orientation in the morning to be a movie extra down in Philadelphia for the next three days and I had to hurry home and rearrange my life. I've lived my life trying to help others. Being a movie extra is purely for me. I love it. But, there are scientists out there really helping people: perfecting vaccines, keeping them sterile, making a difference. Helping people "do more, feel better, live longer." Where do I fit in?

Bloggers Get a Tour of GlaxoSmithKline Vaccine Plant

"Where was that place we went years ago?" my husband continues, Christmas trees still on the brain.

Yeah, uh huh. Where are those vaccine stats? Got them. Quick copy and paste into my draft post for later.

"Okay now, girls, the truck is ready to go!"

Vaccines have changed the landscape of medicine. Check! My girls got all their vaccinations. Check! Check!

"Can you check the map? I think we made a wrong turn."

Statistics roll through my head like movie credits. How will I make them relevant? How will I make people care who have decided vaccines don't matter?

"Found the tree farm!"

Before vaccines, parents in the United States could expect that every year:

  • Polio would paralyze 10,000 children.

"Do you want Douglas Fir or Fraser?"

  • Rubella (German measles) would cause birth defects and mental retardation in as many as 20,000 newborns.

"Where's the $10 off coupon we printed?"

  • Measles would infect about 4 million children, killing 3,000.

"Do you like this one or this one? Who wants to saw?"

  • Diphtheria would be one of the most common causes of death in school-aged children.

"Anyone for hot chocolate?"

  • A bacterium called Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) would cause meningitis in 15,000 children, leaving many with permanent brain damage.

"Let's go set up the tree!"

  • Pertussis (whooping cough) would kill thousands of infants.

"Where are the lights and ornaments?"

Wait, didn't Catherine send a Babble article about parents who are choosing not to vaccinate? I faithfully watched as nurses stuck my children with needles, visit after visit … until the HPV Gardisil vaccination. Too new, too untested, too many reports of adverse affects that may or may not be substantiated. Doctor wasn't happy with me. I said no. I still support all the others. People in other countries are dying without these vaccines that have made us forget these horrible illnesses took massive numbers of lives once upon a time.

"Mom. . . . . come see the wreath Daddy and I made from the leftover greens cut from the bottom of the tree!"

Lovely, just lovely . . . my healthy, robust darlings, fully vaccinated and so very full of life.

When Bloggers Gather: PSMM teams with CyberMondayEvents for LOTSA Fun!

Close to 75 women gathered Monday night at the Dave & Busters in Plymouth Meeting for a fun Cyber Monday party. (which was picked up in the NEWS!)

(Love this picture! Thanks, Jo-Lynne for the pictures and compilation!)

Debbie, Jo-Lynne and I have been working on this for awhile (and in the process created a unique entity called CyberMondayEvents) and I was excited to see it turn out so well and to get such a great turn-out of women willing to join us on a Monday night!

We figured out a good system: Debbie knew most of the toy companies (Little Miss Muffin, Bigjigs Toys, KooKoo Birds, and more), Jo-Lynne knows all the bloggers plus a few more swag sponsors and I bring the check-in girls!

Lindsey & Laura help check everyone in!

Actually, I handled the location and logistics and thanks Ann-Marie, my fave ever person, from Allied Marketing, Dave & Busters was willing loan us their AWESOME new party room which was recently renovated for events like this one. In addition,  Bai Drinks brought delicious antioxidant infusions for everyone to sample and take one home.

Our main party sponsors were: Little Miss MuffinKooKoo Birds, and BigJigs Toys.

Luvin' my Little Miss Muffin, KooKoo Birds and BigJigs Toys Sponsors!

Additional swag sponsors included: Paradocx Vineyards, Fairy Tales Hair CareHorizon DairyMabel’s LabelsOhanarama, Avon and Suave.

And, even more BIG raffle prizes (which had everyone tweeting like CRAZY since that's how they won) by:  Little Miss MuffinKooKoo Birds, BigJigs Toys, CorollePaddywhack Lane, KaZAM Bikes, LEGO, Villeroy & BochASTRA, and Bai.

And, of course, I can't leave out Joey Fortman of Real Mom Media & Ben FM who invited our charity partner Cradles to Crayons and took some great video footage for us.

Thank you, everyone! What a fun night. If you live in a city where you know bloggers and would like to have us run an event like this in YOUR city, please let me know via my contact information on this blog!

Neighborhood Toy Store Day is November 12th!

I love supporting local stores and I especially love toys! So, you don't have to ask me twice to support Neighborhood Toy Store Day! Time to go visit a toy store. Here are some more details:

  • This nationwide event, held every year on the second Saturday of November, reminds consumers of the importance of independent toy stores and the value of shopping within their local community. ASTRA members are part of your neighborhood. They care about their customers and take the time to help them select just the right toy to help their children grow and learn through play.

  • Neighborhood Toy Store Day is a wonderful opportunity to showcase independent stores' expertise and the important role they play in the community– the difference you find at an ASTRA neighborhood toy store. Neighborhood Toy Store Day festivities allow you to see what your community store has to offer. Shoppers who feel overwhelmed by the size and poor customer service at big box retailers will appreciate the well-edited selection and personal service available at their community toy store.

  • SHOPPING LOCALLY GIVES BACK TO YOUR COMMUNITY…

  • Shopping at neighborhood and independent retailers not only increases consumer choice, it also preserves jobs and local character. According to the 3/50 Project, for every $100 spent in local, independently-owned stores, $68 returns to the community in the form of taxes, salaries, charitable contributions, children's educational programs and more–in contrast with only $43 dollars when consumers spend their money at a national chain.

Countdown to Reviewer's Retreat! #RevRet11 @Cheapism

In a mere seven days, I will be loading my new little purple traveling suitcase into my car for 48 hours of lots of bloggy fun! Some of my favorite blogging women will be at the 2011 Reviewer's Retreat this coming Sunday-Tuesday.

AND, I will be there myself thanks to the delightful generosity of my favorite money-saving site, Cheapism.com! I love the information Cheapism offers to consumers like me who want the best product for the cheapest price. When you are buying on a budget, it really helps to have the research done for you!

Of course, I am a bit biased where Cheapism is concerned because I am also on their staff of writers for researched product reviews (see car seats, lawn mowers, riding mowers and much more!) and I've thoroughly enjoyed seeing Cheapism grow into the resource it is today.

So, why does one attend a "reviewer's retreat?" A couple of things sold me on this relatively new conference tucked up in the Pennsylvania mountains.

1) I do love reviewing items. Why? Because it means I try and experience things and places I might not have seen or heard of before. And, it's all free! (See the lovely gold trimmed glasses I just received from Wine Enthusiast.com! They arrived a day before the Royal Wedding! Feels like ages ago, doesn't it? But, I felt like royalty using them.)

May2011 018

2) This conference totally has the location going for it! It's not far from me and it's at the incredible Great Wolf Lodge where my family enjoyed a night last year when I won a family guest pass to try it out.

3) Again, it helped that Cheapism.com is partially sponsoring me. Going to these things gets expensive!

4) And, of course, I get to see some of my favorite blogging women and I definitely look forward to making new bloggy friends. There's truly nothing like getting together in person. The web will never replace the value of human interaction. It only enhances it significantly.

And so, between now and then, I will be attending a meeting about student assessments for my classes at the college; I start the summer session for the two online courses I teach TODAY; I will go with Jo-Lynne to a CAbi clothing show {because CAbi ROCKS} and NOT go to the borough council meeting where I probably should be in attendance as president of our HOA since they are talking about vacating a road adjacent to our property so the local Catholic church can improve the road to their land-locked graveyard; I have numerous other child-related errands {like buying new bras for both daughters and they would totally kill me if they knew I wrote this}; AND, I continue to help my husband build the fantastic beautiful IPE wood deck behind our house. And, then there's a weekend full of activities before I make my getaway, not to mention ideas exploding in my head for the novel I am writing that keeps taking strange and twisting new turns. Oh, and I didn't even mention some exciting news about an event I am working on for the Fall – that I will actually keep secret for the moment. (NO, MOM, I'm not pregnant – just filled with new & fun ideas.)

Life is busy. Life is good. Praise the Lord for strength to do all He's called me to do!

(Lindsey is helping Daddy paint the ends of the IPE with sealer. The wood is so hard, he had to order new drill bits after his first three broke over the weekend.)

Spring Break 2011: Painting, Building, Running a 5K! What a week!

We've had such a busy Spring Break I've had no time to stop and share!

For our DIY projects, you can read more about painting Lindsey's room and see the latest picture of our new deck-in-progress by click here: Spring Break DIY Style!

And, here's Team Carmel from our Saturday 5K!

100_2730

(Me, Lindsey, my sister Michele, Laura's friend Natalie, Laura, our beagle Carmel)

Dogs were allowed at the 2010 Sandy Sprint so we named our team after our beagle. Yes, we walked about half of it but we made it!! Our first ever 5K and what a great cause – ovarian cancer research. And, yes, it was raining but our hats saved us. If I ever do this again, I am coming up with a new system for holding things – or leave more in my car. I brought money, my phone, my camera and my keys. The money fell out about 3x and the phone fell out at least once. Fortunately people were actually nice enough to give the money back and the phone survived the fall. My advice: don't bring it or wear zip-up pockets or both!

AND, we signed Lindsey up for horse back riding lessons now through her birthday in June. If it goes well, we might consider extending the experience. For the first lesson, the trainer said she had natural talent – so . . . this might just be her thing. We'll see.

AND, then came Easter on Sunday when we had my in-laws over for a lovely dinner. As Laura helped her daddy on deck construction in the afternoon, Lindsey enjoyed pulling out all the fancy plates and dishes, including the little salt wells and tiny silver serving spoons from my grandmother. It was very lovely and we were fed both in spirit through church in the morning and in stomach through all the food we managed to bring together.

God is good and I am grateful for so many blessings. I hope you had a lovely Easter as well and enjoy these wonderful warm days ahead with all the bright and colorful flowers springing up everywhere.
