Should You Post Pictures of Your Children Online?

This Monday, June 29 at 10 PM (ET/PT), TNT's hit legal series RAISING THE BAR will follow the case of a father arrested when an innocent photo he posted of his son in the bathtub finds its way onto a child pornography site.

Having seen the episode through a pre-screening DVD, I won't give too much away but will say that the show brings up several powerful questions. To see a preview clip, see my previous post.

In my opinion, one of the most important questions was whether parental lack of judgement can be made criminal – or at least, at what point does it become criminal? There are a lot of parents who don't have a lick of sense and the only way they learn is to be punished by the law when their actions go beyond common wisdom. In this episode, the prosecution screens the jurers with the question, "Would you leave your child in a stroller outside on the sidewalk to go inside and get a cup of coffee, even if you could see the child the whole time through the window?" At what point does that become a criminal offense?

This case purports to be different because the father says he put the picture on the site with no intention of harm to his son. He wanted to share a cute moment with his family and friends but did nothing to password protect the picture or make it private.

Now, I know that when my kids were little, parents lived in fear of film developers catching inappropriate pictures and reporting them. I know I was eternally grateful for digital when I saw that my kids had used the camera to take pictures I wouldn't want ANYONE to see. I quickly deleted all innocently shot pictures taken by children trying to understand their bodies. The body is a fascinating thing but when it is captured on film it opens doors to use the image in ways unacceptable to moral society – as presented in this episode.

In my opinion, taking the picture in an innocent moment wasn't nearly as bad as posting it for the whole world to see. I also know that I kept my own blog anonymous for years so that whatever fears I may have would at least be alleviated by no one knowing where I was or who I was. Many mom bloggers still feel the same way. As I started writing for the local paper, I knew I couldn't hide so I put my name on my blog but reduced how much I actually wrote about my family.

I was also called out by a commentor who said that I seemed willing to share all the details of my life and wondered why I wouldn't share my name. NO DUH, SHERLOCK! I think he answered his own question. If I am sharing all the details of my life, I am not sure I do want people knowing who I am. I made the conscious decision to only share things that I would be willing to represent in person — but I was never really controversial before so things didn't change all that much. If fact, I was convicted of not sharing enough of my convictions online.

The more public I am, through writing, I do wonder about putting up information about where I & my children will be and when. Sometimes I wonder if the "other shoe will drop" since so many fears have been raised among all bloggers about information being used for wrong but now there are so many bloggers doing it – there aren't enough people who care what every one is really doing to do anything about it. That doesn't mean that hearing that someone's house was broken into after twittering he was away doesn't strike fear into all our hearts and remind us to be more cautious.

But, I don't feel this episode is as much about privacy as it is about parental lack of judgement. The man certainly made a poor call to post that picture. Yes, he deserves a parenting class. Is he a criminal? You will have to watch and see what the prosecution delivers into evidence to determine that for yourself! I can't wait to hear your thoughts! Come back here to comment after the show.

Sneak Peak at "Raising the Bar"

You don't want to miss this next episode of "Raising the Bar" airing next Monday on TNT at 10 PM ET/PT. In this episode entitled "No Child's Left Behind," the sticky issue of posting photos of children on the web is addressed in a high drama courtroom. You won't want to miss it!

Sun & Earth Tour

Today, I took the girls for an awesome and educational tour of the Sun & Earth factory down in King of Prussia. (AND, I was able to hang out with some fellow bloggin' mamas AGAIN – twice in just one week!)

The smell of citrus permeated the air as we breathed in the natural ingredients filling their cleaning supplies. We were first shown examples of the raw ingredients that go into their amazing products and then allowed to check out the whole manufacturing process ourselves. I'll let some of the pictures below do the talking:

After the girls filled up their own bottles with all-purpose cleanser, we enjoyed a lovely picnic, a rather interesting comedian and several fun games & activities. My girls especially enjoyed the caricature artist who also works at the factory! They waited patiently (okay, that's a stretch for my kids but well, they were pretty good) for the artist and came away totally excited to see themselves on paper! My daughter's friend Natalie joined us for the day and had her picture made too!

THANK YOU to the employees of Sun & Earth and family who made the day possible. Thanks also to Sarah from Chesco Moms for setting this up and Beth from Total Mom Haircut for keeping us in the loop on directions, etc.!

I will be writing about this great frugally and responsibly fun way to spend a summer day with kids in my frugal living column for The Phoenix! I'll add that link after it goes live!Familystuff 011

Product Review: Nokia E71x

And so, here is the fancy little device sent to me about three weeks ago to review. I was excited because I have never owned a phone on which I can check e-mail and do all the other stuff my friends are doing on their beloved "crackberries" nicknamed for the addiction these divine examples of modern technology afford us.

I do have to send it back this week which is good and bad. Good because I caught myself trying to check e-mail and twitter while DRIVING which one way to become part of the national statistic for car accidents resulting from device distractions. Bad because I was getting used to checking my e-mail when I was out and about. Because this was a trial and I only had a beat-up Razor before this, I didn't buy the full internet access package which I think might have been responsible for the e-mail download quirks I wasn't able to resolve in the time I had it.

As far as features go, I was happy with the QWERTY keyboard, quality of pictures and slim size of the phone. I loved that it could hold a memory card even though I only used the memory on the phone, again since I was only using it for a short time.

I do agree with another review that the back was easy to mark up with fingerprints. I did try to keep the phone in the best shape for returning but it was a tad slippery which made handling it a little difficult. I liked the size however since it fit easily in my hand and I didn't feel like I was talking into a satellite phone like I do with some of the older Blackberries.

In the time I had it, I could not find an easy application for Twitter which I use a lot. Typically I would just go to the website from the internet access. I did see a link to Facebook on the MediaNet Home page. I probably could have added Twitter there too if I wanted to.

On the phone, I also saw the FREE 30-day GPS navigation trial but I didn't want to sign up since I would have to cancel it later. That would be nice in the longrun if I do get a phone like this in the future. I am not going to run out tomorrow and buy one simply because I am not sure I need to check my e-mail so bad that I need it on my body. There was also an option for music which I did not use and probably wouldn't since I have an I-Pod Touch. It meets my needs for music or audiobooks without a phone call interrupting.

Overall, I loved having it mainly to "twitter" since while using it I was at several blogging events which made it fun to share input to the world live from the event. Again, it was not necessary to my livelihood and therefore I can not justify the purchase at this time. If I were to make this phone, I would definitely suggest an option with a holder or more rugged exterior. Phones are too easy to drop especially when there is so much to carry with kids, etc.

Thank you WOM World/Nokia for letting me try this out! See pictures and a video review below.

The video above was still processing when I uploaded it so I will be checking back to make sure it is working in the AM. Right now I think it actually is pulling up another review from YouTube for the Nokia E71x but it is a good review so watch it too if you like!

Frugal Living: Gain Control Over Spending

Here's my latest in the Phoenix which went to a weekly paper AS OF TODAY! Now my column will be in on Saturdays which is exciting because MAYBE I'll have more than five readers now.

Here's the beginning excerpt and a link to read more:

Gaining control over spending key to living frugally

The other day I pulled out my favorite pair of jean shorts. I was shocked at the condition they were in. Paint splattered down the front. Errant strings hung down like a warped version of Daisy Duke's country attire. I wondered when they had gotten so bad?

I thought of a bazillion parallels to life. We get so busy. One day, we open our eyes and it may be paper piles, cleaning, weight, or finances that have gotten out of control. Or maybe all of the above. Remnants of past good intentions are hidden in a messy drawer or a box in the basement. Systems that once controlled your life are now in shambles. What's a person to do?

And, this week I am working on a site dedicated to DIY Frugal! I started one on Blogger but my computer savvy husband talked me into using a wordpress theme instead which is way cool but there's a little learning curve that needs hurdling this weekend to get the site up and running!

And, here the awesome button Jo-Lynne created for me this AM! Love it! It doesn't link anywhere yet since I am still waiting for my domain to register. Much to do yet!

Parenting Squad: When Kids Lie

My newest article just posted over at Parenting Squad: When Kids Lie

Here's a teaser for it: There comes an age with cute antics become outright lies and a parent has to take action before consequences become worse. Discipline is never fun but it is an essential tool to keeping kids honest.

What I Learned This Week: Making it Work

WhatIlearned I learned FIRST of all that this summer is not going to be as boring on TV as I thought. TNT just sent me info. on a couple of great new shows they started for the summer this week. Some of my favorite people have gone little screen. I really don't watch a lot of TV in the summer but now I know there are some new options for those lazy nights in when I just want to veg by the tube.

More on those later (after I watch them and tell you what I think) but here are the titles:

MONDAY

The Closer with Kyra Sedgwick (Season 5; Mondays at 9 PM ET/PT)

Raising the Bar (Season 2; Mondays at 10 PM ET/PT)

TUESDAY

Wedding Day (Tuesdays at 8 PM ET/PT)

Hawthorne with Jada Pinkett Smith (Tuesdays at 9 PM ET/PT)

Saving Grace with Holly Hunter (Season 3;Tuesdays at 10 PM ET/PT)

I also learned that I am going to HAVE to stick with a program to lose the weight I want to lose. There are no ifs, ands, or buts about it (except the big butt I have from sitting here instead of being out jogging.)

Third, I learned that Danny DeVito was on the set of "Its Always Sunny in Philadelphia" here in the Italian market last week. (And so was I. It really is fun being a walking prop. See picture below.)

On the Set of "It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia"

I also learned that if I want to keep my strawberries and raspberries growing healthy and hearty, I need to take some important steps right NOW! Here's a great article on growing raspberries by Gardner to Farmer: Growing Raspberries: 5 Tips for a Better Harvest.

My crop is small but I need to thin them out already. My strawberries are already spreading runners into each other because I planted them too close. Oops.

Ohhh, AND, my little girl turned TWELVE today. I had to reach UP to help her get the knots out of her long hair this AM. So not ready for this!
