Role Mommy Presents Mom's Night In…Philadelphia! from Beth Feldman on Vimeo.
A Writer's Journey
Last night, about 20 Mom Bloggers from around the Philly region gathered for a Mom's Night In at Colleen's house, who so graciously offered to host and did a wonderful job, I might add. Her daughter was in her very adorable blue princess dress and we had fun talking about it since I was her teacher for Pretty Pretty Princess at the Y last Fall.
Beth from Role Mommy came up with the awesome Mom's Night In idea where we received manicures, makeup advice, and massages from Calista's Grand Spa and Salon (who also sent home with us a nice little bag of samples and fingernail polish). Then we heard from the lovely Beverley Caen from Sane Fitness and the reps from Slendertone USA. Wall Street maven by day, Beverly has become a fitness guru by night and showed us some of the great products for getting slim and trim. The Quickstart cards are a complete six-week personal training program in a box. Very cool.
I was running between meetings with sick kids at home and decided to stick around a little longer than expected because it was just too much fun catching up with friends, getting pampered and meeting new inspiring women. I could see my good friends Jo-Lynne from Musings of a Housewife and Melissa from Girlymama across the room. We didn't get too talk long before I had to schoooooch out the door home. I also saw Sarah and Shannon and others from Chester County Moms.
While at the party, the make-up artist was very fascinating. He had a masters in Art and really knew faces. I asked him about make-up for extras in film since that has been a passion of mine lately. He told me that eyebrows really tend to burn out on film. He also told me that digital filming is totally opposite and picks up everything so you want to tone down the make-up in those instances. As with previous make-up consults, I was told to highlight the outside corners of my eyes to make them look farther apart, since I have inset eyes. I think he did a nice job with the peach shadow and dark purple edging around my eyes. I was feeling lovely but of course, forgot take ANY pictures. What kind of blogger am I?
Beth filmed me talking right the beginning, at which point I just start blabbering about everything going on in my life lately. Bringing me back around to the topic at hand, she asked nicely, "So, what is your blog about?"
(HINT: You don't want to admit that you think you might be failing at blogging at a BLOGGING party.)
Later I thought that I should have said, (really anything else but what I did), — that it is a place to corral all my life's activities. It doesn't really have a niche or focus. It is a coming together of many activities and a place to say my peace back to the world when I feel up to it. I would love to blog more and creatively express life so much more but time really makes it tough to think through things cleverly and write them with wit and wisdom – esp. on a regular basis.
Because Beth has worked with talk shows in NYC, I found it interesting that she told Jo-Lynne that blogs are like your own personal talk show. I love that. I am scared for people reading my "talk show" but I like the concept. I am going to have to think about that a little more. Maybe I should do more interviews and demonstrations of what is going on in life. Other people are just so much more funny and if I can capture THEM on MY blog, it just might work.
When it comes to a Moms Night In, I HIGHLY recommend going to one or creating your own for women in your area. Nights like that just make Mamma happy and if Mamma's happy, everyone is happy. I totally blew off another meeting that was POLITICAL in nature. I just couldn't think that hard last night.
And, Beth, if you reading this, you are just AWESOME. Great to meet you!
My latest Frugal Living Articles starts:
Good things come in small packages," or so the old saying goes. I would venture to change it to "the best things come in homemade gift wrap."
When you wrap a gift with creativity and ingenuity, you can save money while adding your own personal touch to the gift. I tapped my Twitter microblogging network to bring you ideas for creating your own wrapping. Combining their ideas with my own, here's what we came up with:

WARNING: SHORT POST ALERT. This one has got to be short. Yesterday was all about grading papers, reading student blogs, creating a mid-term for my college students, writing various things, etc. etc. and I am in brain fry mode. It doesn't help that my daughter is home sick and I think I have what she does.
I learned that Grace knows how to throw an awesome party! Lots of cool and fun friends to meet. She has really gathered a diverse group of creative people in her life. Lots of great minglers!
Head over to Jo-Lynne's for more What I Learned This Week! She has a great post on where ambition falls in the realm of blogging and her own struggles with bloggy comparison.
Here are some great ladies I met at the Blissdom Conference who write on Frugal Living. I know they are only a small representation of many who write on the growing need for frugality and responsible living. I am loving all the great ideas just reading through the blogs to create this post.
If your name is not on the list and you were at Blissdom09, feel free to leave a comment below and I'll add you! Or if you write on frugality but didn't go, leave a comment for others to check out your site!

"Girls, do you think Mommy's crazy?"
"Mom, you are crazy."
Okay but I asked for it. I have come to the conclusion that I struggle with being serious about life because I really just like to have fun. I mean, I do responsible things (most of the time). I say responsible things (most of the time). People probably think I am a serious person.
But, I have to say that when I had a chance a couple of weeks ago to be an extra in a local movie and then an extra in a commercial, I loved ACTING serious and then goofing off afterward, knowing that it was fake. I really came alive ACTING serious. After about 11 hours on the set, with everyone falling asleep and having to be reminded to look awake, the director complimented my expressions because I LOVED acting serious. It was easy for me to blend into the whole "act natural in an unrealistic setting." I stared hard at a little green X knowing that in the movie the judge would appear to be sitting there. It was FUN.
Now, seriously, if I was really thinking about it, I should have been repulsed by the "fake" real profanity coming out of the actor's mouth. Perhaps, I should have walked off the TV commercial about a casino opening. But, it is all fake, isn't it? There are worse things in the world, aren't there?
Hmmm. . . deep thought this AM for a less than serious person. Now, on the acting note, if I was really serious, I would be taking a monologue class. I would be signing up for the open call and saying my lines at the three local casting companies so I could be considered for principal work for REAL money. But, am I that serious about that? Do I have time for such craziness? I hear that extra work is the grunt work of acting but in some ways it is just enough for me. Just enough to let me peer into the lives of truly passionate creative people, directing, acting, working the lights and cameras. The serious people. Maybe it is not enough. Maybe I should be looking up monologues on line and trying to find a coach? Maybe? Well, why not?
If I was really serious, I would be on the trampoline in the basement right now instead of typing this post. I seriously need to lose about 20 pounds to fit into the growing crowd of actors around here, fueled by the incentives PA has offered film companies to film here. Am I serious enough to get into shape, even just for myself, and do what it takes to stay that way? I mean, seriously? I am not getting any younger.
Now, seriously, how does this fit into my other priorities in life, writing, teaching, being a wife, mom, daughter, sister? I don't know but so far it hasn't SERIOUSLY interfered which is why extra work kinda works for me. It is like going to MGM for the day but you are REALLY doing it. You get to ACT serious and you get paid for it, sometimes, depending on what you agree to and what the project is.
And again, seriously, how does this fit into my Christian walk and priorities? Can I have some influence on the world in my Christian walk? I have met other Christians on the set. We are grateful to find each other. Is it okay we are there? I'll need more time to figure that out. So far, I have still been able to keep my serious Christian witness and have some fun in the film industry, I think. It may not be what my other Christian friends are doing but I think God is taking me down a path that I will be able to use for HIS glory. He has seen me through tougher times and I know He is seeing me through these experiences.
Sarah, in the Bible, laughed when she heard God was going to do a miracle in her and let her have a son after so many years. Sometimes, I ask God, "What are you doing with me, with these acting doors coming open?"
And, seriously, sometimes, I almost feel like He is looking me in the eyes and saying, "Are you laughing at me, Sarah? Don't laugh. I have mighty things planned."
I have a children's book that I have started. I love the idea. My kids love the idea. The kids at the Y loved the idea when I told them how it started. I have an ending. Am I serious about finishing it? When?
I also have a long series that, if I get serious, will be truly epic. But don't most writers with a grand idea say that? It rests and grows in my mind, waiting for me to get serious. Perhaps, by making these media contacts, the stories will get attention they need to sell and glorify the Lord in the long run. I don't know, but if I am ever going to get them written, I do need to get serious about them because the topics, the characters, the creative process truly are fun, seriously!
Lots to be serious about this gorgeous Saturday morning. Now, I am going to go work out and get in some serious calorie burning time before creating a serious mid-term & review for my college students and writing the story of a very creative woman's life for Story of My Life and writing a post linking to all the wonderful frugal bloggers I met at Blissdom09 (which I have been meaning to do all week but haven't gotten to) and so on, and so on. . .
And, of course, I can't wait to go pick up Jo-Lynne and celebrate our dear friend Grace!
Now, go take on your day in a seriously fun way!
I finally ignored all advice to find a friend with a good digital camera and have him or her take my photo. Because of the writing I am doing for the paper and the acting as an extra in local TV commercials and movies, I decided it was time to finally go to the professionals.
But, how do you know if that person is worth the money? How do you know if you are going to like what he or she does? How do you decide which picture to use?
There are a couple of things you need to know:
1) Go to someone who does headshots regularly. Don't go to Sears unless you have a recommendation for a specific photographer. I went that route last year. Here's what I got. The woman running the casting company where I took a class about laughed me out the door, in a sorta nice, "I really feel sorry for you" way. It's brutal out there, people.
2) From the picture above, learn the following: Update your hairstyle before going for a professional picture. Don't get shading unless you are wearing costumes from the 1800's and want your photo in sepia tones to imitate that era. Don't wear a turtleneck or dangling earrings. Yes, I pretty much hit all DON'T's on this one which is why I am sharing advice with you today.
3) After that experience, I got my husband, who knows many things about photography, to take this picture (see below), from which I learned that you DON'T put your chin on your hand. I still used the photo for months but I am glad to have it replaced now. DO wear solid colors that compliment your eyes and DO look directly into the camera with "smiling eyes."
3) Finally deciding to go the professional route, I got a recommendation for an awesome woman (named Betsy Brody) who knew that anyone doing any acting needs a photo that can be submitted either in color or black & white (B&W used to be the thing with headshots but apparently color is in now with the advanced technology and lesser expense) AND, who knew how to create an image with the name typed across the bottom. I picked a smiley and unsmiley picture from all the proofs and here's the smiley one.
I ended up spending $238 for two photos and a CD to reproduce the photos myself. I saved money by doing my own hair and makeup AFTER a year of going to hairdressers for updated haircuts and to make-up stores and vendors to learn which products compliment my skin and eyes the best. I could have gone to another photographer who had a make-up and hairstylist who could be there in the studio but it would have been another $150. Perhaps next year but for now, I think this works. What do you think?
I learned that when you are too stubborn to go back to the room the change pants when your hem falls out, this is what you do (see picture). You hem them.
Despite how it looks, I didn't have to consult my laptop on hemming pants in the middle of the Blissdom conference. But, I did have to ask the front desk and fortunately, they had a small mending kit for me.
Ahhh, the things we ladies do when no one is looking!
Then, of course, we tweet it on twitter and the whole world knows what we are doing except those closest to us who don't use Twitter, have never heard of Twitter and could care less about tweets, tweeples, tweepler, twapplers, tweetdeck, tweetgrader, and so on and so on. (BUT, I did JUST create Twitter welcome page which is really a must if you use Twitter so that people coming to your site can learn immediately about you, not what you just did that day.)
I also learned how to pick out a headshot photograph among many which look almost exactly alike but that topic is bound to come back up in Works For Me Wednesday!
Also, I learned something more serious but I think I'll add that in another post too. Apparently, my daughter's dear friend has Tourette's symptoms and it is breaking my heart but also giving me the angst of not knowing if I should let them play since she is saying things I don't want my daughter to hear. Life is full of things to keep us on our knees before God.
Still processing the Blissdom trip and here are some of the pictures coming down the pike!
